Forthcoming March Screenings
Avatar may be the film that is on everyone's lips for Oscar success but this time last year Slumdog Millionaire was the film that walked away with Oscars glory.
Directed by Danny Boyle and based on the novel Q&A, Slumdog Millionaire follows the fortunes of Jamal Malik, a former street child, as he tries to track down his love Latika. The film opens with Jamal being tortured to confess he was cheating whilst on the hit show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. The programme is huge in India, and Jamal hopes that by appearing on it, Latika will see him and get in touch. However as he makes his way through the levels, he is accused of somehow cheating the system - after all, how could a mere street child know the answers to all these questions?
Its a certificate 15 for a reason - there are some scenes which viewers may find disturbing. Equally it is not all doom and gloom, and its warmth, vibrancy and humour leaves viewers uplifted and cheering for Jamal and Latika.
Slumdog Millionaire screens on Tuesday 2nd March, 7.30pm.
Our next matinee is a wee gem. It's October 1957, Sputnik has been launched by the Soviet Union, and the Cold War is warming up nicely. A giant robot crashes to earth, becoming entangled in the wires at a local power station, causing it to shut down. Hogarth Hughes is nine years old, and is discovered by the giant whilst out in the forest. The boy and the robot become friends, with the robot following Hogarth home. Hogarth ends up with two problems - how does he hide the robot from his mother, and how does he keep its existence hidden from the US Government agents?
Beautifully animated and starring the vocal talents of Jennifer Aniston, Harry Connick Jnr, Vin Diesel to name but a few, it is directed by Brad Pitt. It didn't win huge acclaim when first released in 1999 but has gone on to become a classic.
The Iron Giant screens on Saturday 13th March, 2pm.
